First released in 1993, DOOM became a phenomenon in PC gaming history
and is widely recognised as the catalyst for the first-person action
genre. Since its inception, the franchise has been one of the industry's
best selling PC series.
Built on id's revolutionary new 3D graphics engine, DOOM III was
probably the biggest drawcard at E3 this year.
"DOOM III will change what people expect to see and experience
in a PC game," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software. "We
couldn't be more psyched about DOOM III. Get ready to be terrified!"
Those lucky enough to see the special E3 presentation of DOOM III
raved about the game's super detailed 3D graphics, fluid animation
and realistic physics engine. In fact, the graphics were so detailed
and smooth that many people actually mistook them for a prerendered
cut sequence (the kind commonly used for noninteractive game intros
and end sequences).
Whereas Quake III Arena was all about multiplayer mayhem, DOOM
III will focus on the single-player aspect of the game and will
likely include numerous scripted events and a more developed story-line.
In terms of setting, DOOM III isn't actually a true sequel to the
original DOOM, but rather a reworking of the same source material.
Needless to say, DOOM III will be aimed squarely at the horror genre
and id Software have set their sights on scaring the bejesus out
of gamers the world over.
The game is scheduled for release some time next year.
